Character analysis: Darren

Darren is an important part of Musa's life in our film; he is his best friend and shows a different side to the problems of the protagonist. Darren has been kept somewhat mysterious; very little about his background has been told, leaving the audience to fill in many gaps. His costume, a simple black hoodie, reflects that: he's a mysterious figure in Musa's life, an enigma.

The complexity is more in his actions than in words. Even though Musa had hurt him earlier, he stood by his friend at the worst times of his life. This act shows that Darren can forgive and be loyal. Through his silent yet powerful presence, Darren ultimately manages to make Musa understand that suicide is not an option, hence being the moral censor in the film.

Darren's character acts like a witness to the after-effect of support and redemption: even when it seems one cannot get worse, a lending hand may well put him on track to hope again.
