AS Level Media Studies Blog Entry: Our Film Production Journey
Introduction
As part of our AS Level Media Studies project, my team and I worked together to create a short film that explores themes of mental health, emotional struggle, and the breakdown of relationships. The film follows Musa, a man who is battling suicidal thoughts as his life unravels. Our goal was to portray the emotional complexity of depression and the impact of personal connections, with a focus on Musa’s isolation and his emotional breakdown. Through a combination of different locations, character dynamics, and cinematographic choices, we crafted a story that aimed to resonate with the audience.
Our Film Concept
The film centers around Musa, a man whose life is falling apart, leading him to contemplate suicide. The film explores his emotional journey as he faces personal struggles, including his recent breakup with his ex-girlfriend Niranjana, the loss of his sense of self-worth, and his deteriorating mental state. While Musa’s best friend, Darren, tries to offer support, my character, his brother, plays a role in further pushing him toward despair.
Throughout the film, the different characters represent various aspects of Musa’s life, each contributing to his emotional downfall. While Darren’s character attempts to offer solace and understanding, I take a more harsh and dismissive approach. My character's lack of empathy and cold attitude add to Musa's sense of hopelessness, making him feel more alone than ever.
Character Dynamics and Key Scenes
Musa (The Suicidal Man) – Played by my teammate Musa, he is the protagonist of the story, a man whose internal struggles are compounded by the crumbling relationships in his life. His emotional breakdown is the focal point of the film, and his journey reflects the challenges faced by those dealing with depression. The rooftop scenes, where he contemplates his life, symbolize his isolation and sense of being trapped in his own mind.
Darren (Musa’s Best Friend) – Darren’s character represents the supportive friend who struggles to understand what Musa is going through. While Darren tries to offer help, his inability to truly connect with Musa’s internal pain shows how difficult it can be for friends to reach someone suffering from depression. Darren’s role highlights the importance of emotional support, even though he cannot fully help Musa.
Niranjana (Musa’s Ex-Girlfriend) – Niranjana portrays the ex-girlfriend who, after their breakup, has distanced herself from Musa. Her presence in the living room scene underscores the emotional disconnect between them. The breakdown of their relationship is a key factor in Musa’s mental state, as he feels rejected and abandoned. Niranjana’s character embodies the pain of unhealed emotional wounds from past relationships.
Myself (The Brother) – In my role as Musa’s brother, I unintentionally contribute to his emotional decline. In the parking lot scene, I tell Musa to stop begging others for help and to take care of himself. My harsh words, rather than offering support or understanding, only push him further into isolation and despair. I do not intend to help Musa—my character's cold and dismissive approach to his mental state exacerbates the situation. This moment becomes a turning point in the film, where my lack of empathy deepens Musa’s emotional struggle.
Locations and Their Significance
Our film was shot at several locations that were chosen to reflect the emotional state of the characters:
The Rooftop: The rooftop scenes serve as the setting for Musa’s most intense moments of introspection. This location, isolated and open, visually represents the emotional space where Musa feels detached from the world. The wide, expansive shots emphasize his feeling of being overwhelmed by his problems, as though he is standing at the edge of his life.
The Parking Lot: The parking lot scene, where my character confronts Musa, is a significant moment in the film. It’s here that my character’s damaging words are delivered, contributing to Musa’s downward spiral. The parking lot, as a public space, becomes a setting for confrontation, where Musa is forced to face the lack of support from those closest to him. This scene symbolizes the emotional divide between the brothers, highlighting the tension and distance in their relationship.
Musa’s Living Room: Niranjana’s scenes were filmed in Musa’s living room, a space that symbolizes the past and the brokenness of their relationship. The living room is warm but feels emotionally cold, a stark contrast to how it once was. This setting reflects the emotional distance between the characters and the deep hurt that remains from their breakup.
Cinematography and Filming Techniques
As the main cameraman for the project, I worked closely with my team to choose shots and angles that would enhance the emotional tone of the film. Some of the key cinematographic techniques we used include:
Close-ups: Close-up shots were used to capture the characters’ emotional depth, particularly during moments of distress. These shots allowed us to focus on subtle facial expressions and communicate the internal struggles of the characters.
Wide Shots: Wide shots, particularly in the rooftop scenes, were used to convey a sense of isolation and emotional distance. These shots created a sense of vastness, reinforcing the feeling that Musa is trapped in his own mind, with no escape from his troubles.
Over-the-Shoulder Shots: The over-the-shoulder shots in the parking lot scene were used to emphasize the strained conversation between Musa and his brother. These shots allowed us to show the physical and emotional divide between the characters, highlighting the tension in their relationship.
Lighting: The lighting choices in each scene were carefully considered to match the emotional tone. The rooftop scenes, for example, used harsh lighting to create a sense of tension, while the living room scenes had softer lighting to reflect the remnants of warmth and connection.
Challenges Faced During Filming
While creating this film, we faced several challenges. One major hurdle was managing the different filming locations and making sure each space reflected the emotional tone we wanted to convey. Filming on the rooftop, especially with the weather unpredictability, added extra pressure. Additionally, balancing the technical aspects of filming with our acting performances was a challenge, as many of us were new to acting and had to ensure we were portraying the emotions authentically.
Another challenge was ensuring that my character’s actions, particularly in the parking lot scene, were impactful and conveyed the emotional tone we intended. Since my character was not attempting to help but rather adding to Musa's emotional burden, it was crucial that my lines were delivered with the right amount of coldness and insensitivity. We wanted the audience to understand that my character’s lack of empathy, rather than being helpful, made the situation worse.
Post-Production and Editing
In post-production, we focused on editing the film to ensure it flowed smoothly and conveyed the right emotional beats. The pacing of the scenes was carefully timed to match the tension of the story, and we made sure the sound design reflected the emotional intensity of each moment. The minimal use of music allowed us to rely on silence and ambient sounds to heighten the emotional atmosphere, particularly in moments of emotional breakdown.
Conclusion
Working on this film was an eye-opening experience. Not only did it teach me about the technical aspects of filmmaking, such as camera work, shot composition, and editing, but it also gave me a deeper understanding of how storytelling can impact the viewer emotionally. The themes of mental health, isolation, and the consequences of our words were central to the film, and I am proud of what my team and I were able to accomplish. Though we faced challenges along the way, each step in the process helped me grow as both a filmmaker and a storyteller, and I look forward to applying what I’ve learned to future projects. The rooftop:
