The pre-production process:
Why This Questionnaire is Important
When working on a film project, especially one within the thriller or horror genres, it’s crucial to consider how certain themes might affect the audience. While these genres often push boundaries, we want to ensure that the portrayal of sensitive topics like depression and dark humor doesn’t alienate or upset viewers. For instance, humour that touches on serious topics, like mental health, may be perceived differently depending on the audience's background and personal experiences.
The questionnaire was designed to explore three main areas:
Sensitivity to Themes of Depression:
We wanted to gauge how comfortable people are with films that address depression, mental health struggles, and similar topics. Understanding this will help us determine how to approach these themes with the right level of sensitivity.Reception of Dark Humour:
Dark humour often comes up in genres like horror and thriller, and we wanted to understand how people respond to humour that deals with heavier, sometimes controversial topics. It’s important for us to know whether dark humour adds to the experience or if it risks alienating certain viewers.Impact of Transitions in Films:
Transitions between scenes can dramatically affect the pacing and tone of a film. Abrupt shifts or jarring changes may disrupt the flow, so we aimed to find out if viewers are sensitive to such changes and how it influences their experience.
The Structure of the Questionnaire
To capture detailed and honest feedback, I created a series of multiple-choice questions, as well as some open-ended prompts that would give respondents the opportunity to express their thoughts in more depth. Here’s a brief overview of the questions:
Demographic Information:
This section included basic questions like age, gender, and how often people watch movies, helping us understand our audience's background.Sensitivity to Themes of Depression:
We asked if people were comfortable with films addressing depression and mental health issues, and whether they feel films should be mindful when portraying these topics.Dark Humour in Films:
Questions about dark humour aimed to gauge whether people enjoy humour that tackles serious or taboo topics, and how they feel about its use in films.Reactions to Movie Transitions:
We included questions about how viewers feel about abrupt or dramatic scene transitions, whether they find them distracting or engaging.Final Thoughts:
A final open-ended question allowed respondents to share any additional feedback or concerns they might have regarding sensitive content in films.
The Importance of Audience Feedback
By gathering responses to this questionnaire, we hope to make informed decisions about how to handle sensitive content in our short film. Audience feedback will play a critical role in shaping the narrative, tone, and pacing, ensuring that the film is not only creative but also considerate of the emotional reactions it may trigger.
The results from this survey will also guide us in balancing our storytelling—particularly as we aim to address heavy themes such as depression, mental health, and dark humor—without causing unintended distress. Additionally, by understanding how movie transitions are perceived, we can create a seamless viewing experience that enhances the atmosphere of our thriller/horror narrative.
Next Steps
Once the questionnaire is live and we've collected responses, we will analyze the data and adjust our script, scenes, and overall production plan accordingly. The feedback will also help us decide whether to include any content warnings or disclaimers for sensitive material, ensuring that our audience is prepared for any difficult themes. We will continue to share our progress in the upcoming blog posts, so stay tuned to see how the feedback influences our film-making journey!
